The 2003 e7 Summit was hosted by American Electric Power in Washington, DC, and brought together the Chairmen of the nine e7 companies. The e7 launched a new initiative to mobilise financial resources for energy initiatives in the developing world: Global 3E. Global 3E plans to raise funds to complement the e7’s mission in the sustainable development of energy. During the Washington meeting, Chairmen finalised plans to construct a micro-hydro power plant to bring electricity for the first time to Chendebji, a small remote village high in the Himalaya Mountains. Two major new e7 publications were released during the Summit: The e7 Guide to Implementing Projects Under the Clean Development Mechanism and the Renewable Energy Technology Diffusion report, the latter of which presents the findings of the e7’s annual theme, technology diffusion for sustainable energy development.
Major global environmental and social issues that affect the electric utility industry are considered to be the top priorities of the e8.
The issues of sustainable development, climate change, social trust, and internationalisation are the focus of the e8's actions.
