The E8 Network of Expertise for the Global Environment

2006 Evian Summit

The e7 became the e8 at the close of EDF’s Chairmanship year at the annual Summit held in Evian, France in May-June 2006, to reflect the Russian Federation’s largest electricity utility, RAO United Energy Systems of Russia, having officially become a member of the group at the 2005 Summit. The e8 now represents the leading electricity companies of the G8 countries.

During a half-day workshop during the Summit, the e8 Chairmen discussed energy security issues and presentations were given by representatives of the World Bank and the World Economic Forum on security issues in both developed and developing countries. The exchanges resulted in an e8 statement on global energy issues, conveying the viewpoints of the electricity sector to the G8 leaders who will discuss the same theme at the St-Petersburg G8 Summit in July 2006.

In addition, e8 Chairmen exchanged their views on nuclear energy, renewable energies and an ambitious programme to share expertise with developing countries on improvements made in e8 company facilities, particularly with regard to clean coal technologies. The progress of e8 capital investment projects was also discussed.

Chairmanship of the e8 passed to Kansai Electric Company (Japan) for 2006-2007.

The new e8 logo was unveiled at the Evian Summit.
