EDF
Committed to helping customers efficiently manage their energy needs and to reducing CO2 emissions, the EDF Group offers customers advice, information and services on energy efficiency.
EDF Energy has taken the lead when it comes to achieving the target set by the UK government’s energy efficiency programme EEC1. With EEC2 coming up, EDF Energy is working with Group R&D to further improve its offer.

Commercial customers: EDF helps these customers better grasp their consumption with personalised yearly reports (Bilan annuel de consommation, Bilan annuel personnalisé). Two targeted reviews (Projecteur sur and Lettre EDF Pro) keep professional customers up to date on the latest in energy. In 2004, EDF offered advice on air-conditioning, lighting and regulations regarding indoor electrical installations.
For businesses, its Optimia energy efficiency offers complete energy management, consumption monitoring, and load curve services. Through Optimia, EDF can advise customers on all or part of their existing equipment, from prediagnostics of a business’ electricity consumption to advice on how to reduce it (financial simulation), as well as advice on energy solutions – especially optimising lighting – for future offices, shops, workshops, etc.
Local authorities: EDF has adapted its Optimia offers to optimise public spaces: offices, classrooms, swimming pools, public lighting, etc. EDF also advises local authorities on solutions that use renewable energy, especially for HQE (high quality environment) certified projects.

KANSAI
Energy Consulting Service
To help its customers to understand the characteristics of electricity and use it in the best and efficient way, Kansai Electric is conducting energy-use diagnosis activities to study and analyse energy data and the existing condition of energy use at customers’ factories, buildings and various equipment by utilising the Kansai Electric Group’s technology and expertise. By the end of FY 2004, 445 energy-use diagnosis activities had been conducted, and as the result of the diagnosis services for large-size factories, buildings and facilities of its customers, about 3,700 kl/year of energy use (crude oil equivalent, equivalent to bout 6,600t CO2/year) has been assumed to be reduced. Kansai Electric also provides facility management services for the small- to medium-size factories, buildings and facilities of its customers. The service consists of consultation on effective use of general equipment, including electric devices, air conditioning devices etc, and package treatment of design, construction, maintenance and operation of various facilities.
As a part of the activities to solve various problems together with its customers, Kansai Electric is studying possible measures to conserve energy and reduce cost at customers’ factories, buildings and facilities, and is working on a wide range of initiatives to reduce CO2 emissions and decrease the generation of industrial wastes in order to earn trust from customers and to contribute to preservation of the environment for the society.

TEPCO
Development and Diffusion of energy efficiency appliances (Eco Cute heat-pump water heater)
While CO2 emissions from industry sector is almost unchanged between 1990 and 2003 in Japan, residential and commercial sector increased their CO2 emissions by more than 30 % during the same time period. It is getting more and more important to mitigate CO2 emissions from these two sectors to achieve Japan’s Kyoto target.
In order to facilitate energy savings in residential and commercial sectors, TEPCO is focusing on the demand side of electricity. TEPCO recently developed high efficiency water heater system and launched the program called “Eco Support Plan” under which use of high efficiency appliances such as Eco Cute is encouraged.
Eco Cute
“Eco Cute” is CO2 refrigerant heat-pump water heater developed and introduced in Japan in 2001 as the world’s first commercial product of its kind. The heat-pump water heater has features designed to take advantage of CO2 refrigerant including less global warming potential compared with the conventional refrigerants such as HFCs. Compared with the traditional combustion based water heaters, the heat pump water heaters achieved about 30% savings in primary energy consumption and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by about 40%. As the Kyoto Protocol Target Achievement Plan by the Japanese government calls for having 5.2 million units in circulation by the year 2010, Eco Cute will become an even more popular tool for cutting CO2 emissions in the household sector.

Eco Support Plan
In July 2004, TEPCO initiated the program, Eco Support Plan, which helps households and offices cut CO2 emissions by saving energy. The program targets household sector by assisting in the introduction of Eco Cute and the commercial sector by supporting energy conservation improvements such as ESCO activities.
In the household sector, users of the Eco Cute are provided 5,000 yen (about US$50) for CO2 savings estimated to be generated for 15 years by introducing high efficiency appliances. In the commercial sector, the effectiveness of energy saving improvements are measured and evaluated and 600 yen is given for every ton of CO2 reduced. TEPCO also contributes the same amount of donation, under this scheme, to supporting forest conservation activities, leading to sequestering CO2 in the atmosphere.
In FY2004, the Eco Support Plan received 11,000 customers in household sector and 94 customers in commercial sector. The combined CO2 savings for the two sectors is 11,000 tons annually.

Dissemination of useful tips for an eco-friendly life
TEPCO started activities to raise awareness of global warming among its customers, employees and families and encourage them to lead eco-friendly lives.
CO2 Diet
TEPCO invites members of the community to join the CO2 Diet program, in which participants make simple life style changes at home to reduce CO2 emissions. As of March 31, 2005, 2,600 individuals were using TEPCO’s “CO2 household account book” from “Lifestyle CO2 Diet” page on the Internet. The Diet gives simple but useful information to save energies. It also provides the following useful tools for participants to raise their awareness.
CO2 Diet Declaration
The “CO2 Diet Declaration” began in August 2004 when TEPCO and a number of groups battling global warming joined in an executive committee. Participants of the program voluntarily declare the change of their life style by joining the program and seedlings such as pine and wild cherry trees are given to group participants. TEPCO gives financial support in the promotion and operation of the program. As of March31 2005, 16,208 participants joined the program and they have pledged to reduce total of 3,000 tons of CO2.
Offering energy saving information
Through various mass media as well as the backside of the monthly bills, TEPCO provide customers with information for choosing and using energy saving appliances at home. TEPCO also runs events to promote energy conservation. Through these events, its employees as well as its customers attain greater awareness by attending energy saving study session and taking part in the CO2 Diet. With these experiences, TEPCO’s employees are better able to give customers accurate and useful information on saving energy.
